Holiday Shopping Tips: 4 Ways to Save The holidays are here! Once we enter November, it is off to the races to figure out perfect gifts for our loved ones! This can mean stress for many as they try to figure out what gifts to give, without breaking the bank. Here are a few cost and stress-saving tips. 1. Create a Budget. The average consumer spends hundreds of dollars on gifts and that’s why budgeting early is important. To avoid overspending, create a realistic budget and stick to the plan. Start a “gift fund” early in the year and deposit money into it monthly to prepare for the holiday season. Did you know that FCU offers Holiday Club accounts members can use to hold their holiday shopping funds? Open an account, save all year, and the funds will automatically transfer into your FCU checking account. 2. Buy Local. Get to know your community and shop at your local small businesses when buying gifts this holiday season. Small businesses play large roles in local economies and have a personal connection to their communities. November 25 is Small Business Saturday falling between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Many independent businesses offer similar discounts as big box stores during this time of year, so check with your local retailers first. 3. Shop the Sales. Watch for sales throughout the year. Many retailers offer large discounts on holiday weekends. If you struggle with gift inspiration, keep a gift idea journal. As time passes, jot down any gift ideas. If you have some general gift ideas you can be well-prepared for events like Memorial Weekend, Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. Why pay full price when you can receive discounts? 4. Optimize Your Rewards Cards. If you have a point-based rewards card, you may have points available to redeem for merchandise, gift cards, and more to give as gifts. When it comes time to pay, it’s a great opportunity to reap even more rewards by using your FCU Visa® Platinum Reward card! Remember, it’s the thought that counts. An expensive gift doesn’t show how much you love someone. Sometimes the most thoughtful gifts are those that carry the smallest price tag. The true focus of the holidays is about spending quality time with your loved ones – gifts are just a bonus!
